2022 Tax Updates

Maryland Individual Tax returns now due before July 15, 2022

Governor Lawrence J. Hogan, Jr. declared a new state of emergency related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic on January 4, 2022. Due to the continued hardship and economic impact on individuals, the Comptroller has extended the due date for Maryland individual income tax returns and accompanying final payments. This extension only applies to individual taxpayers.

Due dates for corporate, pass through entity, and fiduciary income tax returns and payments are not affected.

Tax year 2021 individual income tax returns due between January 24, 2022 and April 18, 2022 are now due on or before July 15, 2022. The extension applies to both resident and nonresident individuals with a tax year 2021 Maryland filing
requirement. The due date for individual returns from farmers and fishermen, originally 3/1/2022, is also extended to 7/15/2022.

IRS Child Tax Credit letters may have wrong information

The letters that the Internal Revenue Service has been sending to taxpayers about the amounts they received on advance payments of the Child Tax Credit may have outdated information.

The IRS began sending information letters to taxpayers last month about the expanded Child Tax Credit payments and asked taxpayers to save the letters to use when they fill out their 2021 tax return.

“If taxpayers have questions or concerns about the information in their letter, they can also go to IRS.gov and look on their online account and look for the information on IRS.gov,” said Ken Corbin, chief taxpayer experience officer at the IRS and commissioner of the IRS’s Wage and Investment Division, during a news conference Monday. “We are still looking into some of the information we’ve heard about the notices not being correct. We do not believe this is a widespread problem, and as soon as we get through looking at that, we’ll put some more information out that will be helpful to the taxpayers and to you to share back with them.”
